Marisa van Vuuren – Founder and Director of Yoga Zanzibar & Lead Yoga Teacher of the Art & Science Teacher Training Program

Born in South Africa in the Karoo. Marisa has been living on the island of Zanzibar since 2003. She fell in love with the island’s ambience, colors, turquoise blue ocean, simplicity of lifestyle, its people and sunsets.

Marisa van Vuuren is the founder of Yoga Zanzibar – the one and only yoga alternative in Zanzibar offering yoga retreats throughout the year since 2009.

Marisa is an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with the worldwide Yoga Alliance. She teaches dynamic Hatha based on Ashtanga, Vinyasa Flow and Kundalini Yoga, bringing awareness into mindfulness and energy flow. Marisa has been practicing yoga for over 11 years. She also teaches the Art & Science of Yoga 200hr Teacher Training Program certifying yoga teachers.

Marisa’s vision is to be of service to others through sharing the tools of yoga with her teachings. She is passionate about life, yoga, travelling, the ocean, dancing, playing drums and painting.

She is also the co-founder of Divine Diving, Yoga & Dive Center, Zanzibar – the fusion of yoga & scuba diving. www.scubazanzibar.com She is a PADI Dive Master and finds Yoga and diving a true complement as Yoga practice helps you regulate your breath and entering a meditative state while diving.

The Yoga Retreat Holiday consist of morning and sunset yoga classes. The duration of a Yoga session is 1hour 30 min.

You can spent the rest of the day either relaxing, getting massaged, strolling barefoot on the beach, swimming, diving, snorkeling or take a Dhow sailing cruise.

Yoga Style: Vinyasa Flow & Dynamic Hatha based on Ashtanga

Dynamic Hatha Yoga based and influenced on Ashtanga is a vigorous, dynamic form of yoga and it would benefit those seeking strength, flexibility, a clear mind, and an energy boost. This system of breath synchronized with movement (Vinyasa) combines Victorious Breath (Ujjaji Breath) with a set broad range of postures all linked together in a continuous flow- most postures are held for five breaths before moving on. It also uses the energy locks (bandhas) and the eye gazing points (dristis) to focus the mind in a meditative way during the practice.

Vinyasa Flow Yoga is a dynamic flow of yoga marrying movement with breath. Vinyasa Flow – gives a lot more scope for variation and playfulness, it can be very intense and challenging, building heat and getting sweaty, or it can be more of a slower peaceful flow. Either way it is practiced – it has a strong meditative quality.

Yoga Schedule:

Morning Yoga 8:00 – 9:30 am

Sunset Yoga 5:15 – 6:45 pm

Yoga Zanzibar Retreat Dates:

The Yoga Retreats are available throughout the year and you can book at anytime which suits you best. There is no specific starting or ending dates. Yoga groups are small which allows for personal attention and adjustments.

Yoga Level:

The yoga retreat is suitable for all levels from beginners to intermediate and advanced. I break down the postures in different stages and adapt and give variations accordingly.
